Glenside News
For the villages of Careby, Aunby & Holywell, Castle Bytham, Creeton, Counthorpe and Little Bytham
VOLUME 53 Issue 9 (or the 512th Edition)
Dear Glensiders,
Welcome to Autumn, or as it was
known until the late 1600s, Fall. This
nomenclature was taken to America
by English settlers, where in contrast
to the UK, it has survived.
In October and November, we often
look forward to an ‘Indian Summer’, a
term which originally was linked to
autumnal weather conditions in areas
occupied by Native Americans, and
described by the famous artist and
ornithologist John James Audubon in
1820. For hundreds of years, linguistic
developments have been crossing the
Atlantic in both directions !
Our cover this month features the
Stamford and Rutland Small Business
of the Year Award, won by the Castle
Bytham Community Shop ! From a
standing start in 2014, with a plan
initiated by Peter Hinton and
colleagues, the enterprise has gone
from strength to strength, surviving
initially challenging conditions caused
by the Covid outbreak. My
congratulations go out to all the
managers, board members and
volunteers who have made such a
success of a much-needed resource for
the Glenside area ; trebles all round.
See page 21 for pictures of some
happy and justifiably proud individuals
attending the awards ceremony.
For those still somewhat confused,
Garry Jamison has produced a useful
guide to the new bin collection
schedules, which is printed on the
outside back cover. You will notice
that for Aunby, Careby and Holywell,
the green bins are now collected on a
different day from the silver/purple
bins. Just like with mobile telephone
apps, we’ll soon need to consult a
teenager to explain waste collection
systems. It appears that the process
will become more, rather than less,
complicated : see the CB PC report
OCTOBER 2025
on page 11, which indicates that
SKDC may be introducing a new food
waste bin. In principle, that sounds
like a jolly good idea, but the proof of
the pudding .....?
Careby, Aunby and Holywell Village
Hall are having their Annual Open
Meeting on Thursday 9th October at
7pm at the Hall. The Parish Meeting
takes place on Thursday 16th
October at 7.30pm in St. Stephen’s
Church. See pages 45 and 11.
I have received a number of
communications over the past few
years on matters relating to the
Parish, from residents with sincerely
held views. Please forgive my
presumptuousness, but I would urge
as many residents as possible, if time
and circumstances permit, to attend
both meetings.
Honestly, I had not intended to
mention the T word this month.
Unfortunately, I have just watched the
POTUS address to the United Nations
General Assembly. His extraordinarily
patronising approach, combined with
his usual rambling and incoherent
delivery was familiar, but I hadn’t
expected the level of arrogance and
clear stupidity exhibited. Now we know
- climate change is clearly a massive
hoax, says the man with an ego the
size of the solar system combined with
the intellectual capacity of a headless
chicken.
Breaking news : in a post on Truth
Social (oxymoron - Ed) the next day,
the President described an escalator
glitch, a teleprompter failure, and a
perceived PA issue during his UN visit,
to be “three very sinister events”,
amounting to “triple sabotage”. No
thought for the poor souls forced to
listen to his nonsense for almost an
hour!
Best wishes for October
