Glenside News
For the villages of Careby, Aunby & Holywell, Castle Bytham, Creeton, Counthorpe and Little Bytham
VOLUME 53 Issue 11 (or the 514th Edition)
Dear Glensiders,
Welcome to meteorological winter
(commencing December 1st). This
definition is based upon average
temperature data, whereas astronomical
winter, based on the earth’s orbit, starts
on the winter solstice on December
21st, the shortest day.
Bizarrely, in the northern hemisphere
the earth is actually closer to the sun in
winter than in the summer. The main
effect is that the earth moves faster, so
that winter is around five days shorter
than summer! So not long until Easter!
(The date of this religious festival being
based on a combination of the Spring
equinox and the lunar cycle.)
There are a number of Christmas
events taking place in the Glenside area
that I would like to highlight.
Four of these are detailed on the inside
back cover in glorious technicolour :
there are Christmas Cabarets in both
Castle Bytham and Little Bytham on
December 6th, and both villages have
organised carol singing expeditions;
Little Bytham on the 11th, and Castle
Bytham on the 16th. No experience
necessary, although you’ll probably be
expected to enjoy a mince pie !
The Castle Bytham Advent Window Trail
has returned - see the back cover for a
detailed map of the participants. This
presents a great excuse for a walk
around the village and to see some very
impressive displays.
On December 5th Bythams School is
hosting a Christmas Fayre, with Santa’s
Grotto, games, trade stands and crafts see page 13 for details.
On December 19th, Little Bytham
Village Hall is hosting a festive Bingo
Night - no doubt there will be one or two
little ducks in attendance. Details also
on page 13.
If you’d like to continue your
celebrations between Christmas and the
New Year - there is a multi-faceted
event at Castle Bytham Village Hall on
DECEMBER 2025/JANUARY 2026
December 28th, combining Music,
Bingo and Curry (and, of course, a
licensed bar). This sounds great fun,
and proceeds go to Bythams School.
Details on page 37.

Do have a look at Jackie Murray’s
Nature Notes article on page 33. I was
as surprised as she at the number of
relatively rare birds that she
encountered in our local churchyards. I
very rarely see Goldcrests or Mistle
Thrushes, and had no idea that a
Peregrine Falcon was visiting Little
Bytham ! Keep your eyes peeled, and I
will repeat my annual appeal ; please do
let me know if you spot any Waxwings.
Many residents have expressed
concern about the number of vehicles
speeding in Castle Bytham. Cllr Kirsty
McLaughlin is keen to organise a
speedwatch team in the village and
monitoring exercises will be scheduled
so that volunteers can participate
without significant time commitments.
See page 23 for details.
Rose Bakker, although now living in
Bourne, retains a close relationship with
the Bythams community, and still likes
to contribute to our esteemed
publication. Have a look at page 19,
where she gives an amusing and fun
account of her attendance at an unusual
production of Othello. I wish I’d been
there !
Last night, Russia was still bombing
Ukraine. Mr Trump is now promoting a
Peace Deal. This involves Ukraine
relinquishing territory that Russia
illegally occupies, as well as areas that
Ukraine still controls. It also forbids any
application to join NATO.
Clearly, Trump’s dictionary has confused
the word ‘peace’ with ‘total capitulation’.
As always, there will be no magazine in
January, so until February, best wishes
for December, Christmas, January and
the New Year!
