CASTLE BYTHAM VILLAGE HALL
LITTLE BYTHAM VILLAGE HALL
17 December and 21st January at 7.30pm
Tuesday 5 February at 7.30pm
It was good that, like October, there was a strong attendance
from members of the public for November's meeting as it was
a shorter meeting than normal with fewer issues to discuss. It's
great to see villagers engaging with us on issues that really
affect them.
Speed was on the agenda again. This time with concerns
being raised about the speed of vehicles approaching the
disused railway bridge on Morkery Lane between the village
and the A1, in particular in relation to HGVs either travelling
too quickly, or in some instances being too big to pass under
the bridge. Information was passed to District Councillor
Penny Robins who, as a start, will confirm information back in
regard to signage at the A1 junction warning of the low bridge.
Residents were again present to raise concerns over a local
planning application that is directly impacting them. They
were happy to hear the Parish Council shared their views, plus
the District Councillor was glad to offer support in escalating
issues and getting answers. Should anyone want any further
information on any planning applications, the Search for
Planning Applications section on the South Kesteven District
Council website is where to look. www.southkesteven.gov.uk
The working Amenities group is looking into the
possibility of installing two bins in the cemetery to dispose of
any dead flowers when they are being replaced.
As you will have read last month with the retirement of
Murial Cooke as our long-standing Parish Clerk, we will soon
be placing advertisements on the Parish Council notice boards
as well as in the Community Shop. If anyone would be
interested in the post or finding out further information, please
email clerk@castlebythampc.go.uk. In the interim we would
like to thank Ben Cullis who has stepped into the role.
You can still emailclerk@castlebytham.co.uk with any
questions on village matters.
Dave Goode, Parish Councillor
At the November meeting a resident spoke at the Public Forum to
inform councillors that a new vicar, Rev Edward Martin, will be
looking after the four churches in the area, including St Medards.
He also asked if the PC would be willing to make a contribution
towards the cost of the church grass cutting.
County Councillor, Charlotte Vernon, advised cases of Avian
Influenza have been detected in Doddington and the Corby Glen
area and a 10-mile exclusion zone is in place. She suggested if you
keep birds to house them indoors to prevent the spread of the virus.
Cllr Hodgson advised that a number of cars travel too fast on
Church Lane. One resident said that a car recently nearly hit a
child. Cllr Vernon said she would speak with Highways to request
a 5mph sign.
Flooding issue in Station Road and the surrounding area were
discussed and Cllr Vernon said she would approach Highways with
regard to the culverts.
Cllr Hodgkin also raised concerns about the overgrown hedge
and the pavement on Station Road.
South Kesteven District Council has passed the use of 30mph
signs on the road by the Spinney play area and these will be
changed in due course.

Beth Hodgson,
Chair of Little Bytham Parish Council
CAREBY, AUNBY AND HOLYWELL PARISH MEETING
The autumn bi-annual Parish Meeting was held on the 16th October, returning to St Stephen's Church for the first time since it was put
out of use due to flood damage in January 2024. Agenda items covered included flooding, PCC report, highways, finances, the Careby
defibrillator and consultation processes on the two major local solar projects.
Flood risks in lower Careby are a major focus area for the parish. The Parish Meeting Chair has been working with Andrew Hoyle
(recently elected churchwarden), the Environment Agency, Lincs County Council and Alicia Kearns MP on flood prevention and
resilience. The agencies have both visited the area and are very much aligned on recommended actions, but converting recommendations
into actual action has proved a slow process. At the Parish Meeting there was strong support, with a couple of objections, for encouraging
the agencies to get on urgently with their professional recommendations. A site meeting involving both agencies has been set up for late
November and will hopefully result in action being taken. The urgency of this work was demonstrated again in mid-November when an
Environment Agency flood warning was issued for the West Glen. Sandbags were put in place at the church and fittings lifted up above
potential flood levels. By Saturday morning the river level had risen to within a few inches of the top of the main road bridge arches, but
fortunately it began to subside later in the day and did not burst its banks. A full survey of the lower Careby area using the drone
capabilities of the Fire & Rescue service has been arranged.
Maintenance work on the church has been ongoing and will continue to deal with outstanding jobs with a rolling maintenance
programme established. Working parties will be organised and anyone who is prepared to give a few hours to help look after the 12th
century church and its graveyard would be very welcome. Please contact Andrew Hoyle on andrew.n.hoyle@gmail.com if you could be
available. Regular fundraising is essential and a very well supported and successful concert by the Rutland Big Band was held in October.
Further events are being planned, so please look out for details in the Glenside News and come along to enjoy any that appeal to you.
The water which flows down Holywell Road towards the Careby railway bridge has been discussed over many years at Parish
Meetings and has been raised with Lincs Highways department, without any action being taken. This becomes a major road safety
hazard when the water freezes, creating a solid stretch of ice leading down to the B1176 on a steep incline. Cllr Vernon committed
again to pursue this with Lincs Highways and hopefully action will be taken before it is finally triggered by a serious accident.
