Glenside News
For the villages of Aunby, Careby, Castle Bytham, Creeton, Counthorpe, Holywell and Little Bytham
VOLUME 54 Issue 5 (or the 519th Edition)
Dear Glensiders,
Very close now to the Glenside area’s
biggest event of the year. See the
inside front cover. I do hope that as
many readers as possible can
come along and enjoy all the events
and meet up with friends, family and
other Glensiders. It really is a
wonderful community celebration,
much envied by villages outside our
immediate catchment area. On an
entirely personal note - please do
support the duck race ! I recall a
conversation a few years ago with a
lovely lady who approached me with
some concerns. Being someone of
little brain, it took me a minute or two
to realise that she thought that we
were employing the services of real
ducks. Serves me right for advertising
it, without any qualification, as a duck
race. (I must admit to having not learnt
my lesson in this regard.)
I hope you appreciate our retro-styled
cover image. I think it provides a
reasonably accurate representation,
although I have to admit that it was AI
generated - apologies to all those of a
sensitive disposition. Apologies, also,
that we were unable to instruct AI to
include specific images of Pig Dyke
Molly and the Bourne Borderers - we
got quite boring generic Morris dancers
instead so they were left out of the final
version!
Most residents of Castle Bytham
should have received a note about
contributions to the Festival tombola please do check if you have any spare
or unwanted items which might be
suitable ; all proceeds go to the
Church, the Village Hall, the
Community Shop and other local
community groups. If you missed the
collection in your street you can drop
items off at the Community Shop.
There are a couple of new attractions
this year ; the Guiding Sparks Circus,
with cuddly dragons and Faye the
Bubble Fairy, and the Rhubarb Theatre
JUNE 2026
Driving School where little ones dress
up as a car and follow an instructor
around a silly obstacle course. Some
of our local drivers might learn
something !
A number of residents are participating
in a garage sale on the Saturday
morning - see the outside back cover
page for details.
I don’t expect, nor deserve, any
sympathy, but I’m stuck indoors writing
this on the hottest day of the year (and
a bank holiday !). Caroline Aherne
(RIP), appearing on ‘The Fast Show’,
famously referred to this sort of
weather as ‘Scorchio’. It certainly was!
Following some generous responses
to our Sri Lanka article in the March
issue - we thought we’d push our luck
and do a short piece on our recent trip
to the Doñana National Park near
Seville. This is one of the largest
wetland reserves in Europe, and home
to an astonishing number of birds. We
spent around six hours there, and saw
65 species of birds. That in itself was
amazing, but within those species we
hadn’t anticipated the sheer number of
the birds we encountered. In the UK,
we’re fortunate to see two or three
individuals of the less common birds.
In Doñana, we often saw dozens from Black Kites to egrets, flamingoes,
storks, lesser kestrels and, wonderfully,
turtle doves. See the inside back cover
for a taster.
Regular readers will be aware that for
entirely personal and selfish reasons I
occasionally make gratuitous
references to the delusional and
moronic statements and actions of the
President of the United States of
America. ( the name derives from
Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian
immigrant!) The President’s rambling
and incoherent nonsense continues, to
the extent that I feel I’ve lost the will to
live - so I’ll say no more!
Best wishes for June -
Alan
