I’ve decided I’m
the greatest baaa none!
Glenside News
For the villages of Careby, Aunby & Holywell, Castle Bytham, Creeton, Counthorpe and Little Bytham
VOLUME 53 Issue 4 (or the 507th Edition)
Dear Glensiders,
VE Day will be officially remembered
on May 8th. Apologies to those with
specific affiliations to the British Army
and the Royal Navy : our cover images
are specifically referencing our
anticipated flypasts by BBMF aircraft at
the Castle Bytham Midsummer
Festival, which should include the Avro
Lancaster on the 21st June, and the
Spitfire and Hurricane on the 22nd. For
very different reasons, and none the
responsibility of the BBMF, flypasts
have not been possible for the past
three years, and so I would ask
everyone to keep their collective
fingers crossed that logistics and
weather are in our favour !
See page 33 for more information on
the BBMF and the planes we hope to
see.
Regarding the entire two-day Festival,
see the inside front cover and page 11
for the details of this year’s event.
Check also the back cover for info on
the 5K Chase, which kicks off the
weekend on Saturday morning. You
don’t have to run, or even jog - you can
just take a leisurely stroll if you wish !
Castle Bytham are the current InterVillage Quiz Champions following their
crushing (marginal - Ed) win at the
beginning of March. Modesty forbids
me from admitting any involvement see page 19 for the report. This
account would have appeared last
month but for my incompetence : mea
culpa.
Having referenced a Roman Catholic
liturgical phrase, it would be remiss if I
omitted any mention of the recent
passing of Pope Francis. The next few
weeks will determine the direction of
travel of the Vatican hierarchy and
affect the lives of millions of people. If
you haven’t yet seen the awardwinning film ‘Conclave’, you can read
the 2016 novel by Robert Harris on
which the film is based. The
‘constituency’ has changed
MAY 2025
significantly in the last decade, with
many more Cardinals appointed from
Africa, Asia and South America. The
outcome is extremely difficult to
predict.
Returning to the CB Festival (seamless
transition - not - Ed), see page 21 for
info on the new ‘Young Entrepreneurs’
opportunity, introduced for the first time
this year. Yet another exciting
innovation from which I think I’m
probably excluded. Ageism rears its
ugly head once again - to whom may I
complain ??
I’d like to reference a couple of local
community events coming up shortly.
The CB Community Shop is hosting a
fun Race Night at CB Village Hall on
May 10th (details on page 25), and
Bythams Primary School’s May Fair
takes place a week later on May 17th.
If possible, do try to support these
invaluable resources in the Bytham’s
community.
Following on from last month’s
references to supporting our Swift
populations, we at Chez Harvey have
put up a couple of dedicated Swift
boxes - if you encounter any likely
candidates, can you point them in the
direction of Glen Road ?
Whilst on the ornithological theme (not
again - Ed), this morning our nesting
duck had to start coping with newly
hatched chicks. While she was still on
the nest, another female arrived in our
small pond with nine one- or two-day
old chicks of her own. To a greater or
lesser extent this will involve tears, if
not wailing and gnashing of bills. Time
will tell .....
With a final reference to the sad death
of Pope Francis, it appears that the
last ‘VIP’ he met was JD Vance. The
Pope’s health prevented him from
hearing JD’s confession : a relief for
the Vice President, because he would
have been there for weeks .....
Best wishes for May -
Alan
