Meet the aspiring Young Entrepreneurs!
At the beginning of this year a small group of Castle Bytham residents who run businesses in the
village hatched a plan to encourage local young people to enter a Dragon’s Den type scheme.
The ultimate aim was to have a stall at the Midsummer Festival to sell their produce, but along the
way they would acquire skills to equip them later in life, such as formulating a sound business plan,
managing a budget and marketing their products, assisted by their own particular ‘dragon’.
Kate Goodman of Kalida People set up the scheme with support from other businesspeople
and the Midsummer Festival Committee, and provided the templates for the business plans.
Here, she announces the young people who have come forward to face the challenge.
Wow, what an amazing response we have had to our
inaugural Young Entrepreneurs scheme!
We now have four sets of Young Entrepreneurs who
will be having a stall at the Castle Bytham Midsummer
Festival in June, if their business plans all come together.
Our hopeful young businesspeople have now been
paired up with a ‘Dragon’ who will help them fulfil their
dreams and they are busy working on their plans and their
produce, and preparing for the big day.
YEs and their wares
So who can we look forward to seeing if their schemes all
come to fruition, and what will they be selling?
We have the potential for:
Friendship Bracelet kits made by Zara
Vernon - everything you need to make
attractive beaded jewellery
Sewn Items, including scrunchies,
bobbles, glasses cases and sew your own
keyring kits designed and hand-made
by Edith Larder
Our Dragons
The Castle Bytham businessmen and women who will be
steering our entrepreneurs will be:
Jacqui Kavanagh from
Edge Venues Ltd
Kate Goodman from
Kalida People Ltd
representing the
Glenside Business Hub
Les Potton, who is now
retired but spent many
years running his own HR
consultancy
Cathy Lawson, owner of
Maestro Wellbeing.
We've also enlisted help from other talented folk
around the village to help our entrepreneurs with some of
the things they might need, and share their particular
experience and skills with them.
The idea for the scheme was born when some young
people approached Kate and Jacqui at last year’s Festival.
So this is really a scheme for young entrepreneurs created
by young entrepreneurs - we just made it happen.
What’s next?
Lots of delicious Candy Floss spun by
Thomas and Samuel Dutton
Each of the successful young entrepreneurs will be
allocated a stall space at the Festival, which they will have
to run themselves. Then, at the end of what will hopefully
be a successful day, they will report back to the Dragons
on how they did profit-wise, what they learnt from taking
part and, fingers crossed, how much fun they had!
Keep an eye out!
A host of edible goodies,
including waffles and
homemade lemonade
from The Sweet Spot Girls
On Sunday, June 22nd, the Midsummer Festival
Committee will be providing banners to mark out the
Young Entrepreneur stalls so when you stop by you will
know that you are supporting the scheme and encouraging
the young people with your purchases. Let’s reward their
hard work and help them achieve their dreams!
Look out for the June issue of the Glenside News to hear more about our young superstars.
