WITHAM NETBALLERS HEAD TO THE IAPS NATIONALS
and Clyde.
This is interspersed with clips from the
movies of a Hollywood dreamboat (Jake
Gyllenhaal, the director's brother) and the
ruminations of a pair of hardboileddetectives
(Peter Sarsgaard, the director's husband, and a
horribly miscast Penelope Cruz).
Much like its patchwork protagonists, the
film is an unholy mess stitched together from
mismatched parts that lurches from horror to
comedy to musical to film noir with all the
sophistication of a drunken autopsy.
Undertone (Cert 15)
is out in cinemas from April 10
We're so used to treating cinema as a primarily
visual medium that we often overlook the
importance of sound in shaping what we
perceive.
Debut writer/director Ian Tuason sets out to
exploit that unfamiliarity in Undertone, wherein
a pair of podcasters (Nina Kiri and heard-butnever seen Adam Di Marco), who specialise in
investigating real-life paranormal mysteries, try
to decipher a series of 10 unsettling audio files
anonymously emailed to them.
The files themselves are mini-masterpieces of
suggestion, mixing banal conversation, backwards
messages, chanted nursery rhymes and creepy
sound effects. But while the early sequences get
under your skin, the effect gradually diminishes
the more the film unspools, mainly because the
script doesn't really give you enough information
to resolve the mystery of what you're hearing.
Rather than building to a crescendo, it simply
peters out into an irritating whine.
