REMEMBERING VILLAGE
CHARACTERS
Dear Editor,
We enjoyed reading Nigel Allsop's article in the March
issue, about Castle Bytham village characters. We're
pleased to see that people are keeping these people’s
memories alive as they were part of our village.
We often talk about many of them and Harold Bradley
is one of the characters on our memory list. We remember
him living at 10 Glen Road, never locking his door and
often going out and leaving it wide open. How times have
changed.
Harold enjoyed talking to the kids and he could often
be seen singing and dancing in
the street. He loved to go down
to the cricket pitch [that used to
be in the field at the end of St
Martins] to watch his nephew
Tant play. There was one day
when he was challenged to go in
and bat. Off came his coat and
he did a great job. Newer
residents of the village could
find Harold daunting and maybe
crossed the road to avoid
meeting him, but he would never
have hurt anyone and his heart
was always in the right place.

CORBY CHOIR
Dear Editor,
To a full
church of
friends
relaxing
with a
drink in
the pews at
St Stephen's
in Careby,
the Corby Male Voice Choir launched into Jesus Shall
Reign. Then a short introduction from Fr Ed, in his first
function as our licensed priest, was followed by Psalm 23,
the Vicar of Dibley theme tune.
That summed up the theme of the evening – variety with music ranging from spirituals to show tunes. Solos,
including a Lithuanian love song accompanied by a
balalaika, an Italian number and The French Horn by
Flanders and Swan, were complemented by rousing, roofraising full choral renditions.
This appreciative comment received says it all: "Well,
that was a great evening. What a brilliant choir - the solos,
power and delicacy, the conductor, pianist - it was all
really, really good." Thank you to all those who came and
supported St Stephen's church.
Mary Hoyle, Holywell
PS The choir's 50th Anniversary Celebration Concert is
on 27th June at the Corby Cube.
