I’m going to look
rather sheepish
next to a T-Rex
at the Festival.
Raaaargh!
Glenside News
For the villages of Careby, Aunby & Holywell, Castle Bytham, Creeton, Counthorpe and Little Bytham
VOLUME 53 Issue 5 (or the 508th Edition)
Dear Glensiders,
You will, I’m sure, be aware that the
CB Midsummer Festival is taking place
on the 21st and 22nd of this month.
This is, by far, the biggest event of the
year in the Glenside area, and
engages hundreds of residents,
whether directly involved or as
supporters and visitors.
The Festival programme is now
available : you can pick up an advance
copy from the CB Community Shop,
the Fox and Hounds and Castle pubs,
and Rasell’s Garden Centre in Little
Bytham.
Sheena & I have been involved for the
past 15 years : we’ve met lots of great
people, had tremendous fun and are
really proud of the Festival’s
achievements. The event has grown
over the past 30 years, from a small
number of residents having a
theoretical and fanciful discussion over
a pint or three in a local hostelry to a
gradually increasing number of
enthusiastic volunteers, transforming a
small Village Fair into the current
Festival.
See page 13 for the reminiscences of a
long-standing volunteer, and if you
think you may be able to spare just an
hour or two over the weekend to help
out with any of the Festival activities,
please call me on 01780 410380 or
email admin@midsummerfestival.co.uk
to find out about the options - with no
obligation!
Apart from the BBMF flypasts (fingers
still crossed for weather & favourable
logistics), keep an eye out for
marauding dinosaurs (timely in view of
the new BBC series) and our local
young entrepreneur stall holders. See
page 21 for their details.
For new residents, please note that
Pinfold Rd, Castlegate, Heathcote, St.
Martin’s and part of Glen Rd
(Castlegate to Water Lane) will be
JUNE 2025
closed to all traffic on Sunday 22nd
June from 8am until 5pm, to enable
pedestrian access to the 60+ market
stalls on that day. A short diversion
route is via Water Lane and the High
Street.
Do have a look at Arthur Chambers’
fascinating recollections of VE Day in
Castle Bytham on page 19 : we are very
fortunate that we have residents with
first-hand knowledge of those events.
Following my reference to the Vatican
Conclave last month, it appears that
MAGA zealots are dismayed that,
although American, the new Pope is
not ‘America First’. Certainly his views
on immigration differ from those of US
Vice President JD Vance (a Roman
Catholic !), who he publically criticised
a few months ago when he was still a
Cardinal.
President Trump, of course, believes
that God protected him in order that he
could save America. I suppose if you
were to believe that God does indeed
move in mysterious ways ....??
Whilst (vaguely) on election matters our local County and District Councils with the notable exception of SKDC were generally enthusiastic about the
creation of a new Greater Lincolnshire
Combined County Authority, chaired by
a new Mayor. Mainly Conservative
controlled, they presumably hadn’t
anticipated the phenomenal rise in
support for Reform UK. I could, of
course, not possibly comment.
Finally - Mallard update : our nesting
duck had eleven chicks, ten of which
have survived. They stayed in our
garden for a couple of weeks, and
have been visiting daily for the past
month. They’re well fed and should be
fledging soon. Despite incentives,
none are interested in participating in
the Festival Duck Race. Luckily, we
already have 600 lined up for that !
Best wishes for June -
Alan
